World class
Located in the heart of some of the best pheasant hunting in the world.
You will surely find what you’re looking for as a pheasant hunter. We are 4th generation farmers and have access to nearly 2,000 acres of natural habitat including cattail sloughs, CRP, and perfectly sized food plots. Farming for pheasants helps us to ensure you the best chance of bagging your limit of 3 roosters per day during your hunt. Our farm is located near Turton, South Dakota and we also have land located near Doland, South Dakota. One thing is for certain, the birds are never too far away!
Dakota Feathers News
Dakota Feathers proudly welcomes Fynn to our family!
We would also like to thank Chris at Teton Bird Dogs for our new addition. We look forward to many years of hunting with our new German Shorthair Pointer. She has an amazing pedigree and we have high expectations of her.
Goodbye to Boo
With tear filled eyes, this past July we said goodbye to Boo. She was one of those dogs that even she was alive, healthy, and vibrant, I couldn’t stop thinking about the day when she wouldn’t be around. I knew it was going to be just that tough. I was right. Boo blessed us with 13 wonderful years and this fall just won’t be the same without her! I’d guess she pointed and retrieved well over 1,500 birds in her career.
On another happier note....our expectations have been met in Fynn. She’s a year and a half old and a hunting machine! She and Case will hold down the fort as good as they can.
Lodging
Currently, Dakota Feathers doesn't have any lodging available on site. However, there are many motels within a short 50 minute drive (or less). Possibilities include Watertown, Aberdeen, Clark, Redfield, and Doland. These towns provide you with what you need and more for a true South Dakota hunting trip. They provide both home town cooking and some of the more commercialized foods you may crave. When booking your hunt, Chad will be able to provide you with the best suggestion for your group.
Dogs
We use primarily German Shorthair Pointers, with an occasional lab mixed in (depending on your guide for the day). Your well behaved dogs are welcome to accompany you on your trip. Hunting with your own dog is an experience only a dog owner can relate to, and once you hunt over a good dog you will never hunt without one again. We have had many wonderful dogs through the operation over the years and look forward to many more. ***Special Note*** If you are in the market for a pup please get in touch with Chad.
The Hunt
The first week of the season the hunting starts at 12:00. The second weekend it starts at 10:00 am. Bird limits are 3 roosters per day. The birds are cleaned and packaged for you after your hunt. We typically start the day by meeting at the farm 30 minutes prior to the start time. We will provide the transportation from field to field after that. No alcohol is allowed until after the hunt is complete for the day. Lunch is served in the field, as well as refreshments throughout the day. All South Dakota hunting rules and regulations can be found at the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Website.
What to Expect
Chad has been guiding since 1998. It's a down home family atmosphere. Chad's wife Shawn, and their three children, Kayla, Riley, and Logan are always helping out, often behind the scene. However, the boys are starting to help run dogs and make some of the walks with the hunters. They are definitely an asset to the operation and will provide you with that true old fashioned family experience.
Hunting Groups
Dakota Feathers only accepts groups of 6 hunters or more. The maximum number of hunters in a group is 14. We typically only bring in 4-5 groups each fall. There are no self hunts offered at this time. Our hunts are fully guided.
Fees & Booking Information
$225 per hunter per day. A 50% DEPOSIT is required at the time of booking. This is non-refundable after August 1. If a hunt needs to be re-booked, it would have to be during the same season/year. After that the deposit is lost. Get a hold of Chad via phone (605-881-8446) or email. All hunters are responsible for purchasing a valid South Dakota Hunting license. Visit the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks website to read about pricing and requirements. Feel free to browse our photos and call soon as we already have dates booked for next fall. We hope to hear from you soon!
Other Hunts
Whitetail deer hunts may be available upon request (preferably bow hunts), as well as waterfowl hunts. Prices will vary. Our part of South Dakota has been suffering from a drought for a few years now and the duck migration has shifted a bit. The waterfowl hunts are hit and miss but if we stay in touch it is still an option as a secondary part of your hunt. We truly stress safety and can all but guarantee your shots at wild birds with the way the operation is run.
Thanks for Visiting Dakota Feathers
If you want references, I will provide you with as many as you would like. I've been doing this a while now, and am looking forward to getting my family, particularly Riley and Logan involved in the hunting operation. They are truly avid future outdoors men! My wife Shawn does the planting at the farm and basically tells me what to do regarding the farming! Kayla helps out when she can. We are blessed to have the opportunity to take this wonderful lifestyle over from her parents.
